Officers charge 4 with attempted murder, kidnapping

Officers with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department reportedly charged four people with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery on Dec. 16. According to documents, the charges followed an incident that allegedly occurred earlier in the month involving a man being beaten multiple times.

Detained in connection to the case were two Altoona women, ages 36 and 43, an Altoona man age 33 and a 43-year-old Boaz man. They are all in custody in the Etowah County Detention Center with bonds set at $150,000.

Officers said the incident which led to the charges occurred when the four accused the alleged victim of stealing one of the women’s purses. The four then reportedly beat the man and duct-taped and handcuffed him. Allegedly, he was repeatedly beaten with an object similar to a bat. The man managed to free himself and walked in order to get help. His injuries required treatment at the hospital in the intensive care unit. He has since then been released from the hospital and has returned to his home.

A person can be charged with attempted murder if they either intended to cause the death of another or continued despite knowing where their actions could lead. People who are facing such charges may find it to be in their best interests to seek the help of a criminal defense attorney. Upon a careful review of the evidence, a criminal defense attorney may be able to identify possible defenses to the allegations. He or she may also be able to find witnesses for the defense or to negotiate favorable pleas with the prosecuting attorney. Even if a person is charged with a crime, he or she still has the constitutional right to defend against all of the charges.
