Alabama man and woman charged for trafficking “spice”

On Aug. 13, two Alabama residents were detained on charges of possession of a synthetic drug known as “spice.” Police claim that the man, age 26, and the woman, age 20, were allegedly in possession of enough of the drug to make up to 5,000 packets of spice.

Following an investigation, the two individuals were taken into custody at a residence located on Liberty Hill Road in Etowah County. They allegedly had received the shipment of the synthetic drug in powder form from China. Both individuals were charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of salvia and drug trafficking, and they were each being held on $150,000 cash bond. Their preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 4.

Spice is usually made from a combination of AB-Pinaca powder and acetone. Occasionally, additional chemicals may be added. The mixture is then usually sprayed onto tree leaves and then packaged. The commander of the Etowah County Drug Task Force stated that the synthetic drug could be incredibly dangerous because the amount of chemicals that go into its manufacturing are often not measured or controlled. However, the drug has become popular due to its wide profit margins.

Those who were accused of drug trafficking or possessing synthetic drugs may be facing serious legal consequences if they are convicted on drug-related charges. An attorney may help provide a strong defense depending on the facts surrounding a case. For example, the police illegally searched a defendant or their property without a warrant or reasonable cause, any evidence collected from the illegal search could be considered inadmissible in court.
